Industria Pesquera Santa Priscila sustainably harvests, packs and distributes a variety of fish and seafood products from their busy chartered fishing facility in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Established in 1976, the company is a leading exporter of its goods to businesses across Europe, the United States, Latin America and Asia. Besides the active food processing and packing areas of the Guayaquil site, there are several warehouses where diverse raw materials are stored.

Over the past decades, a traditional fire alarm system was installed in the production areas as a measure to keep personnel safe during business hours. However, the nearby large storage areas had not been covered at all by any smoke detection or fire alarm systems. They were therefore continually left vulnerable to fire hazards and arson attacks. This meant that large volumes of valuable business assets, including branded packaging materials with a high fire load, could be damaged or completely destroyed without safety personnel or local firefighters being alerted quickly enough to adequately respond.

Constant concerns among safety managers for the site were that a significant loss of essential raw materials could occur very rapidly, along with the realization that employee safety could be at risk as they worked in adjacent areas. It was time to consider options to protect the entire Santa Priscila premises, including all warehouses. Finding a system which could provide proven early detection of smoke and fire for their specific application, however, was a challenge. They also needed a robust solution – customer demand is high and false alarms would be an undesirable interruption to business efficiency and fulfilment of orders.

Enrique Gilbert - IT Manager at Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila

The implementation of this early detection system has been a success.

Enrique Gilbert. IT Manager at Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila

The Santa Priscila safety managers, Enrique Gilbert and Marcelo Pineda got in touch with Adeatel, an important SI and Bosch partner to find out if Bosch could provide a suitable solution to the industrial plant’s specific fire safety needs. Alberto Serrano, Adeatel Project consultant says, “We considered the options to detect fires efficiently, given the importance these warehouses represent for the overall operation of Santa Priscila.” He, besides Mario Crespo, General Manager of Adeatel and Bosch Business Development Manager, Dennis Sánchez, conducted an assessment of the industrial plant and provided in-depth fire safety and security consultancy. This included a demonstration of video-based flame and smoke detector AVIOTEC.

On site, Dennis Sánchez explained how AVIOTEC can be effectively positioned and intelligently configured to reliably detect real flames, smoke or smoldering within seconds. Alberto Serrano says, “We met with security and IT staff to present the advantages of AVIOTEC as a multi-purpose solution, as, besides generating fire alerts to a centralized panel, AVIOTEC allows you to obtain video data to make recordings and visually validate alerts.” Dennis Sánchez explained that the all-in-one solution can monitor a premises even overnight with infrared lighting which is automatically activated in low-light conditions. Crucial business materials and equipment would therefore be protected around the clock. In addition, the fire detection system functions as a security camera for spotting night-time intruders and thus supports both security and fire safety personnel.

Having seen the system demonstration, the IT and security managers were convinced that AVIOTEC was the ideal safety solution for the vast industrial spaces at Santa Priscila. Using Bosch fire system planning tools, the Adeatel and Bosch team could tell their customers the number of AVIOTEC cameras, their locations and positioning required to monitor each warehouse and production hall. This was to ensure the system would be used optimally, with each video-based system effectively covering as large an area as possible. Once these were installed, to ensure absolute coverage of the entire premises, innovative AVENAR 4000 smoke detectors were fitted in small spaces between AVIOTEC’s reach.

Having designed and implemented a fire detection system using video analytics for Santa Priscila has been a highly satisfactory achievement.

The networked system was connected to an AVENAR 8000 fire alarm panel so the innovative video-based and optical smoke detectors would alert safety personnel instantly if smoke or flames were identified on the site. To round off the advanced solution for Santa Priscila, Bosch Remote Services were installed. Remote Services allow the site’s safety staff to monitor, troubleshoot and assess the maintenance needs of the entire system, including AVIOTEC, AVENAR detectors and the fire alarm panel. The smart connectivity means they can continuously ensure the optimal functioning of all components from anywhere with an internet connection – which saves precious time for all staff.

Prior to the final project delivery and handover of the system to the customers, internal tests were carried out by the Adeatel and Bosch team and final calibrations were made accordingly. The entire process from consultation to delivery took around three months. Several follow-up controlled tests were conducted to ensure the smooth operation of the system during Santa Priscila’s day-to-day business. End users at Santa Priscila were impressed: They now had a multi-function, fully compatible and futureproof system for fire safety and security coverage implemented on their premises – which also made it highly cost-effective for the long term.
