How did the story of Bosch Building Technologies begin?

The foundations for our expertise in building security in Germany were laid in 1920, when Hanseatische Notruf AG was established in Hamburg. The ability to report emergencies was a game-changer for fire safety at the time, and this emergency call center was the first of many innovations Bosch Building Technologies would introduce in the decades that followed.

The security technology product division – the predecessor of today’s Bosch Building Technologies business unit – became part of the Bosch Telecom division in 1989, focusing on building security. While Bosch Telecom’s broader business struggled during the second half of the 1990s, the security division continued to thrive. During this period, key innovations reached the market, including the Universal Emergency and Fire Alarm Control Panel (UEZ) and the ViStar video storage system.

How did Bosch Building Technologies expand its security technology portfolio?

In 2001, we acquired Detection Systems, a leading U.S. manufacturer of electronic security technology. From then on, our portfolio kept growing and, starting in 2002, a series of acquisitions brought video technology and communications solutions into the fold. The division eventually encompassed three product categories – video systems, access control and intrusion detection systems, and communications systems – and was renamed Bosch Security Systems. That same year marked the official birth of what is now known as Building Technologies.

What were the milestones of global expansion?

Since 2015, Bosch Building Technologies has consistently further expanded its global expertise. We started with the acquisition of U.S.-based Climatec, then brought in German building automation specialist GFR in 2019. The acquisition of the UK’s Protec Fire & Security Group in 2021 strengthened our fire protection business across Europe, while the takeovers of Hörburger (2022) and DMS (2024) deepened our expertise in building automation. The acquisitions of Paladin Technologies and West Coast Fire & Integration in 2023 further solidified our foothold in the North American market across security solutions, system integration services, and fire protection.

How did Bosch Building Technologies reposition itself strategically?

These acquisitions have done more than grow our brand portfolio. They have brought in talented teams and highly qualified individuals, expanded our solutions and services offering, extended our local presence, and strengthened our position as one of the leading system integrators. In 2023, Bosch announced a sharper focus on the system integration business, and this shift concluded in 2025 when the company divested its product business for security and communications technology. With that step, we reaffirmed our commitment to the regional system integration business, delivering solutions and services for building security, fire life safety, energy efficiency, and building automation. The fire life safety product business continued alongside this.
